Following a theme here.

Last month I went to class and one of my classmates (we'll call her classmate #1) had a big black eye. Asked her what happened and she sheepishly looked at me and said after our last clinical (she was in my clinical group) she and another classmate went drinking--they dont remember much except that they had a big fight with a bunch of bouncers and and she was hit in the eye...

Fast forward to two weeks ago when I was working on an in-class assignment with classmate #2 whom #1 had gone drinking with (I was assigned randomly to work with this chick). Conversation went like this:

Classmate #2:
I need to get out of here early today.

Me:
Got lots to do, eh?

Classmate:
No, I need to go to the ED.

Me:
You ok?

Classmate:
Yeah, I gotta get these staples out of my head. (Pulls back hair and shows about 3 inches of shiny staples staring back at me from her scalp.)

Me:
What happened to you?????

Classmate:
Oh, I got into a fight at the bar a couple nights ago. I was really drunk and got hit over the head with a bottle.

Me:
Was this the same fight that you and Classmate #1 got into?

Classmate #2:
Nope, it was a different one.

Me:
Um, I'll have to remember to walk (RUN) away if I ever see you out with a drink in your hand. (Granted, I dont go out, but still!)

Classmate #2:
Yeah, I'm a mean drunk.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, and our finals party, at 10AM on Friday MORNING, is being held at a nearby bar where the owner is opening early so people can have an all you can eat wing buffet and drinks. At. 10. AM. In. The. Morning.

Needless to say, I'm not going. Hope there are some designated drivers for those peeps. So yeah, substance abuse a big problem in college and even nursing students. Kinda scary.

I wouldn't leave my house until 4:00 that afternoon! I'd be afraid to be on the same streets as those people. They're going to be up before the state nursing board before they are even licensed to try to explain the DUI.

Dang, I just read quite a few of your postings! I am so sad, that personal integrity means so little to these students. Are they incredibly young or just stupendously stupid???? Soooo disappointing. I did stupid things in jr hi and hi school, and thankfully became a christian and grew up!
