i had my ED Tech/GN nurse interview--well part of it--on sat. and it went extremely well (they sent me off for the personality test and everything). basically i would work as a tech until grad then if all goes well sign on to the ED as a GN...
think the tech part would be great experience for now as i need lots of skill practice, but not so sure i would want to stay there--guess i would have to see what the ED is all about. i have done a couple observations as a student nurse in the ER that basically showed me zilch. asked about OB and was told they would "cross train" me after i served some time in the pit. hm. not sure i believe them.
basically i am being told no one hires straight into OB (of course there are exceptions)--you go via critical care or med surg after a year or start in mother baby (which is fine by me). might take the tech position but whatever i do i will still leave my options open and interview wherever i can.
any ED techs out there? what do you do? looks like i will do caths, blood draws, vitals, stocking and some unit sec. stuff and they will throw me a bone every once and a while and i can try some IV's/other nursing procedures on the hush-hush depending on how well i am doing and who wants to risk their license on me.
taught a short childbirth class friday night and had fun. its so nice to utilize what you know every once in a while without the fear of screwing up/killing someone/getting kicked out of school. *sigh*
(ps: the suit was a hit! all the "suits" were wearing suits, so i fit in nicely and looked like i meant business and was serious. the kids interviewing in khakis looked cute but not as professional.)

I volunteered in the ED and watched the techs: they were happy when volunteers where there because otherwise it was they acting as housekeepers and bring visitors magazines and coffee. They did CNA stuff and, as you mention, other stuff according to what their RN was willing to risk her license for. All emphatically told me it was worth it for what they got to see, FWIW.
Sounds like that suit investment was worth it :)
I'm sure you'll get a lot of great experience in the ER. That's probably where I'd go if I couldn't do OB. There are actually some similarities, believe it or not... they both do triage, for example.
